Ten Lives Lost: FRSC Warns Against Speeding and Mixed Loading
FRSC Boss Frowns At Disregard For Safety Advisories By Road Users
The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mallam Shehu Mohammed, has expressed deep concern over the continued disregard for safety advisories by some road users.
Reacting to a fatal accident that occurred on Monday along the Tafa-Gujeni route at the Malam Tanko axis of Niger State, which claimed ten lives, Mallam Shehu Mohammed highlighted the serious consequences of non-compliance with established safety regulations, particularly excessive speeding and the unlawful conveyance of passengers alongside goods.
According to the FRSC boss, preliminary investigations indicate that the crash was caused by excessive speed, which led to loss of control, as well as the illegal practice of mixed loading—transporting both goods and passengers in the same vehicle.
He explained that FRSC operatives responded swiftly to the distress call, rescuing 23 victims and clearing the obstruction to ensure the free flow of traffic.
“The injured victims were immediately evacuated to Umar Musa General Hospital, Sabon Wuse, for treatment, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the hospital’s mortuary,” he said.
The Corps Marshal, while expressing deep concern over the incident, described it as avoidable and a painful reminder of the dangers associated with traffic violations.
He further emphasised that the Corps would intensify enforcement and public enlightenment campaigns to curb excessive speeding and eliminate the menace of mixed loading on the nation’s highways.
Mallam Shehu Mohammed therefore advised transport operators to strictly adhere to safety regulations, observe prescribed speed limits, and avoid using unsuitable vehicles for passenger transport.
He also stressed the importance of road users remaining safety conscious at all times, noting that road safety is a shared responsibility.
