Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has approved a three-day public holiday to commemorate the Eidul Azha celebration across the country.
According to an official notification released by the Cabinet Division on Wednesday, the public holidays will be observed from May 26 to May 28, 2026, spanning Tuesday to Thursday.
The government explained that the approval aligns with an earlier circular issued on January 19 concerning public and optional holidays scheduled for 2026.
During the holiday period, government offices, schools, educational institutions, and businesses that observe public holidays are expected to remain closed.
The announcement came after Pakistan’s Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee confirmed the sighting of the moon marking the beginning of Zilhajj 1447 AH.
The committee’s chairman stated that Eidul Azha would be celebrated nationwide on May 27, while the first day of Zilhajj commenced on May 18.
Officials disclosed that moon sighting reports were received from several locations, including Karachi, Mardan, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, and other areas within Sindh province.
Reports also indicated that the moon-sighting session took place at the Meteorological Department in Karachi in partnership with the Ministry of Religious Affairs.
Earlier projections by Pakistan’s Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) had suggested that Eidul Azha would likely be observed on May 27 based on astronomical estimates.
Meanwhile, Nigerians continue to await an official declaration from the Federal Government as preparations for the Eid celebration intensify.
