Integrity first: University takes tough stand against harassment and extortion.

Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) has dismissed five members of staff over allegations of sexual abuse, harassment, intimidation, extortion and other forms of misconduct.


The decision was reached during the university’s 122nd Governing Council meeting held on June 12, 2026, according to a statement issued by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Harrison Madubueze.
The affected staff members are:
Prof. C.C. Nwabachili – Immediate Past Dean, Faculty of Law, Igbariam.
Prof. Chike Osegbue – Department of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences.
Dr. I.H. Iheukwumere – Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Uli Campus.
Emeka Nwabunnia – Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Uli Campus.
Ifeoma Kakulu – Principal Assistant Registrar and former Examination Officer, Faculty of Law Exams Unit.
Madubueze stated that the five officials were found culpable of offences ranging from sexual harassment and abuse to intimidation, extortion and ethical misconduct.
Zero Tolerance for Misconduct
According to him, the Governing Council reaffirmed its commitment to discipline and integrity, stressing that any action capable of tarnishing the institution’s reputation would attract severe sanctions.
“The council reaffirmed its stance on discipline and integrity, warning that actions tarnishing the university’s reputation would face severe consequences,” Madubueze said.
He added that the university remains committed to providing a safe, accountable and forward-looking environment in line with its vision of building a modern institution for the future.
Madubueze noted that the disciplinary measures reflect the university’s determination to uphold ethical standards and sustain public confidence in its academic and administrative processes.
