A Nigerian trader identified as “Big Joe” has been shot dead in Witbank, South Africa, following the expiration of the June 30, 2026 ultimatum issued to African migrants to leave the country.

According to reports, Big Joe was killed in front of his shop in the presence of South African protesters who have continued to target African foreign nationals across different parts of the country.

As of the time of filing this report, South African authorities had not made any arrests in connection with the killing.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian government has, over the past two weeks, evacuated more than 500 Nigerians who voluntarily indicated their willingness to return home.
The latest incident comes amid ongoing anti-foreigner protests in South Africa, where groups of protesters have taken to the streets of major cities, allegedly harassing and, in some cases, killing black African migrants whom they accuse of taking their jobs. Reports also allege that these actions have occurred with the protection of security forces.
