Bloodshed in Birnin-Gwari as Farmers Come Under Deadly Attack

Suspected bandits have launched a deadly attack on communities in the Birnin-Gwari Emirate of Kaduna State, killing at least nine farmers and abducting several others.

The attack occurred on Saturday evening at about 6:30 p.m. while farmers were working on their farmlands.
According to local sources, the violence was triggered after two armed bandits allegedly attempted to steal a farmer’s motorcycle. The robbery attempt reportedly failed when one of the attackers was killed, while the second escaped.
A resident, Ibrahim Garba, said the surviving bandit later returned with a heavily armed gang, which launched a brutal assault on farmers in the area.
“So far, nine bodies have been recovered from the fields. While three of the victims are yet to be identified, six have been confirmed as Habibu Danko, Zaharaddin Musa Gumu, Maibaka Mayana, Umar Maibaka, Yusufu Dankatakaki, and Shaf’iu Kagadama,” Garba said.
He added that several farmers were also abducted during the attack, with fears that more victims may have been killed.
“We are still conducting search-and-rescue operations led by local vigilantes to locate those who are missing,” he said.
Another resident, Ishaq Kasai, a Safety and Security Consultant for the Northwest and former Chairman of the Birnin-Gwari Emirate Progressive Union (BEPU), said the search for additional victims or survivors would continue on Sunday.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the police nor the Kaduna State Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs had issued an official statement on the incident.
