Benue Police Arrest Suspected Arms Supplier, Recover 115 Rounds of Live Ammunition

The Benue State Police Command says it has recorded a major breakthrough in its efforts to combat violent crime with the arrest of a suspected arms supplier and the recovery of 115 rounds of live 7.

In a statement issued by the Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu, the arrest followed an operation by officers attached to the Guma Division on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

According to the statement, the operatives intercepted two men riding on a motorcycle during a routine stop-and-search exercise. One of the suspects reportedly jumped off the motorcycle and escaped into a nearby bush on sighting the police, while the other was apprehended.

The arrested suspect was identified as 20-year-old Joro Jakata from Awe Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. A search conducted on him led to the recovery of 115 rounds of live 7.62mm ammunition allegedly concealed in his possession.

Police said the suspect is in custody, while the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Makurdi for further investigation.

The Command added that efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspect and determine the source and intended destination of the ammunition.

Commissioner of Police, CP Cletus Nwadiogbu, commended the officers for their vigilance and professionalism, describing the arrest as a significant step in the Command’s campaign against the proliferation of illegal arms and ammunition.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines, assuring the public that all credible information would be treated confidentially and acted upon promptly.
