Gusau gives reasons for his resignation

The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Gusau, has explained that his love for Nigeria and determination to continue contributing to the progress of football influenced his decision to resign from office.

Gusau disclosed this during a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, following his resignation alongside other board members.
He was elected NFF President on September 30, 2022, at the 78th Elective Congress held in Benin City, Edo State.
His resignation came amid calls for an investigation into the NFF’s handling of football in Nigeria, following the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Explaining his decision, Gusau said Nigerians should always put the country and its progress first. He noted that those involved in managing football needed to reflect and determine the best way forward.
He said he consulted family members, friends and stakeholders before deciding to resign, adding that he also advised members of his board who wished to follow him to resign.
Gusau further stated that, despite leaving office, he would continue to contribute to the development of Nigerian football, drawing on his experience and relationships within African football.
