Airtel pauses airtime and data loan features, assures uninterrupted core services
Airtel suspends airtime, data borrowing services amid regulatory review
Airtel Nigeria has announced a temporary suspension of its airtime and data borrowing services, a feature that previously enabled eligible prepaid customers to access credit and repay upon their next recharge.
The telecommunications company disclosed on Friday that the decision is part of ongoing efforts to align its operations with evolving regulatory and operational requirements within Nigeria’s telecom sector.
In a statement, the Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, Femi Adeniran, explained that the move reflects necessary adjustments aimed at ensuring compliance with industry standards.
Despite the suspension, Airtel reassured its subscribers that regular airtime and data purchase options remain fully available. The company emphasized that the change will not affect overall service delivery or network performance.
Also speaking, Director of Marketing, Ismail Adeshina, described the action as both necessary and responsible. He reiterated the company’s commitment to transparency, consumer protection, and continued innovation in Nigeria’s digital space.
According to him, the temporary pause provides an opportunity for Airtel to better align with current expectations while maintaining high-quality service for its customers.
The company added that updates regarding the status of the suspended credit services will be communicated in due course.
This development comes amid increasing regulatory scrutiny of digital lending and credit-based telecom services, prompting operators across the industry to reassess and adjust their offerings.
