The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has commenced preparations for its upcoming national convention with the inauguration of a committee tasked with overseeing the process.

The party’s National Chairman, Professor Sadiq Gombe, disclosed this shortly after the SDP’s successful participation in the ongoing annual inspection and verification exercise conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.
Professor Gombe explained that the committee will coordinate activities leading to the convention, including nominations and other party programmes.
He noted that Professor Usman Bugaji has been appointed as chairman of the committee, with Mulikat Akanbi serving as deputy chairman.
He further stated that the Chairman of the House Committee on Solid Minerals, Jonathan Gaza Gbefwi, will serve as secretary, alongside other party leaders and stakeholders.
According to the SDP National Chairman, invitations will soon be extended to stakeholders and members of the media to ensure transparency and adequate coverage of the convention.
Professor Gombe also revealed that the party fully complied with the INEC verification exercise by submitting all necessary documents.
He said the process involved proper identification of members using valid means such as voter’s cards, driver’s licences and international passports.
He added that the party currently has about fifteen million registered members nationwide.
The chairman further stated that membership registration remains ongoing in preparation for future congresses, conventions and primary elections scheduled for 2026.
Professor Gombe noted that members of the party’s National Executive Committee, state chairmen, zonal leaders and other representatives were present during the verification exercise.
He described the exercise as peaceful, transparent and successful.
He maintained that internal party matters, including leadership issues, congresses and disciplinary actions, remain within the jurisdiction of the party in accordance with its constitution.
Professor Gombe urged the public and the media to rely on verified information and disregard misinformation circulating on social media.
He reaffirmed the SDP’s commitment to strengthening its structures and building a solid platform for future political engagements.
