Tragedy in Yobe as 17 Police Officers Die During Terrorist Assault on Training Facility

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the death of 17 police officers following a terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School located in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.


Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, disclosed that the officers were participating in specialised operational training when heavily armed gunmen carried out a coordinated assault on the facility at about 1:15 a.m. on May 8, 2026.
According to Placid, several personnel of the Nigerian Army also lost their lives while resisting the attackers. The development was made known in a statement issued on Saturday.
Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, described the deceased officers as committed and patriotic personnel who demonstrated dedication to national security through their involvement in counter-terrorism and tactical training programmes. He extended condolences to the bereaved families, assuring that the sacrifices of the fallen officers would always be remembered.
Meanwhile, the Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, visited the training school on behalf of the IGP. During the visit, he met with the Commandant of the institution, Brigadier General A.C. Enuagu, other military officers, and surviving police trainees. He encouraged the trainees to complete the programme in honour of their fallen colleagues.
The police further stated that security agencies, including the Armed Forces, are collaborating to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
