Fear Grips Bori After Former LG Security Chief Is Gunned Down

A former Chief Security Officer of Bori, the headquarters of Khana Local Government Area in Rivers State, Letam Kine, has been shot dead by unidentified gunmen.

The attack occurred on Sunday evening along Polytechnic Road in Bori, causing panic among residents and forcing businesses to shut down temporarily. Witnesses said the assailants opened fire on Kine before fleeing the scene, while residents and passers-by ran for safety after hearing the gunshots. His lifeless body was later found.
An eyewitness, who spoke anonymously, said many residents suspected the attackers were cultists. The witness explained that business and social activities came to a halt immediately after the shooting, with shop owners hurriedly closing their stores. Although normal activities resumed the following day, many residents, particularly students, remained fearful. The witness also noted that police officers arrived after the attackers had escaped.
Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of Khana Local Government Area, Dr. Thomas Bariere, condemned the killing, describing it as a senseless act of violence with no place in a peaceful society. In a statement issued through the Director of Press and Public Communications, Barry Neemana, Bariere noted that the incident came just weeks after the killing of Clement Deegbara J. of Kpong Community, warning that the repeated attacks pointed to the activities of armed criminal groups attempting to destabilise the area.
The council chairman called on security agencies to intensify operations across Khana, carry out a thorough investigation into Kine’s death, and ensure those responsible are arrested and prosecuted. He also extended condolences to the deceased’s family and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and ensuring justice.
Confirming the incident on Monday, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Superintendent of Police Blessing Agabe, said the victim’s body had been deposited in a morgue. She added that security patrols had been intensified in the area and that investigations were ongoing to identify and arrest the perpetrators.
