The Labour Party has officially unveiled Hajia Bintu Konto as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election. She will run alongside the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Chibuzo Okereke, on a ticket the party says reflects competence, integrity, inclusiveness and national unity.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Eluma Asogwa, the Labour Party said the decision followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders. It described Konto as a respected public health expert, humanitarian leader and development practitioner with more than 30 years of experience in healthcare delivery, community development, humanitarian intervention and stakeholder engagement.
The party noted that Konto built an impressive career with Catholic Relief Services before retiring, serving in several strategic positions, including Community and Government Liaison Program Officer. During her service, she worked closely with governments, traditional institutions, civil society organisations and local communities to promote health, nutrition, WASH and humanitarian programmes across Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states. She also coordinated community mobilisation and humanitarian interventions that benefited thousands of vulnerable Nigerians, including internally displaced persons.
A trained nurse, midwife, health educator and public health specialist, Konto holds a Master’s degree in Public Health and has also served as a lecturer in Community Health. She is currently a member of the Country Coordinating Mechanism (CCM) of the Global Fund in Nigeria and serves as National Treasurer of the Civil Society for Malaria Control, Immunization and Nutrition (ACOMIN), among other professional affiliations.
According to the Labour Party, Konto’s experience in governance engagement, humanitarian coordination, conflict-sensitive programming, women’s empowerment, community mobilisation and public policy implementation makes her well-suited for national leadership. The party also highlighted her fluency in English, Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa, Fulani and Bura as an asset that will strengthen its vision of rebuilding Nigeria.
The party said her nomination reinforces its commitment to gender inclusion, national unity and competent leadership drawn from every part of the country. It added that Konto brings compassion, administrative competence and a deep understanding of the developmental challenges facing women, children, rural communities and people affected by insecurity.
The Labour Party said the Okereke-Konto ticket represents a new generation of people-centred leadership committed to restoring hope, strengthening national institutions, reviving the economy, improving security and delivering responsible governance. It called on Nigerians to support the ticket in the 2027 presidential election.
