Task Force Neutralises Two Terrorists, Rescues Three Kidnap Victims in Benue

Troops of Sector 1, Joint Task Force Operation WHIRL STROKE (OPWS), have recorded a major operational success in Benue State, neutralising two suspected terrorists, rescuing three kidnapped victims, and recovering a cache of weapons and ammunition during a coordinated operation.

The intelligence-led mission, conducted in collaboration with the Benue State Civil Protection Guard between July 16 and 17, 2026, targeted suspected terrorist hideouts in Tse Togo and Utenge communities across River Yooyo at Orter Camp in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area. The troops advanced from Takum in Taraba State through difficult terrain before engaging the suspects in a fierce gun battle, during which two of the terrorists were neutralised.
The operation also secured the rescue of three kidnap victims identified as Mr. Nyityo Abraham, a teacher; Mr. Uzuegwu Chukwuemeka Decency, a spare parts dealer; and Mr. Terhember Tavarshima, a farmer, all from Katsina-Ala LGA. Military sources said several other captives escaped during the exchange of gunfire.
Troops recovered one AK-47 rifle, one G3 rifle fitted with an optic sight, a pistol, 19 AK-47 magazines, various rounds of ammunition, a Moniepoint POS device, and multiple military-style camouflage uniforms from the scene.
The Force Commander of OPWS, Major General Moses Gara, praised the troops for their bravery, professionalism, and resilience, reaffirming the task force’s commitment to eliminating terrorist activities and restoring peace across the joint operations area. He also commended the support of sister security agencies and local communities, stressing that sustained collaboration remains critical in tackling insecurity. The successful operation marks another step in ongoing military efforts to dismantle criminal networks and protect lives and property in Benue and neighbouring states.
