The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of Nollywood actress Tope Osoba after a prolonged battle with breast cancer.

Her passing was announced on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, by one of her colleagues through an Instagram post, bringing an outpouring of grief from fans and members of the entertainment industry.

It will be recalled that in November 2024, the late actress appealed for financial support to continue her cancer treatment at an undisclosed hospital. Her colleague, Daramola Osoba, had taken to social media to publicise her condition and seek assistance from well-meaning Nigerians.
According to Daramola, Tope had already undergone one stage of surgery but required additional procedures to remove the remaining cancerous particles from her breast, with the treatment estimated to cost about ₦12 million. She also shared a video of the actress during a hospital examination, revealing that Tope had sought support from Bolaji Amusan, President of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN).
In an interview with BBC News Yoruba, Tope disclosed that she discovered a lump in her breast during a routine self-examination. She explained that although a doctor initially dismissed the lump as being related to her childbearing age, her insistence on further medical evaluation led to additional tests, which confirmed it was cancerous.
The actress described receiving the diagnosis as “one of the worst days of my life,” a battle she fought with courage until her death.
