TINUBU SEEKS EXPEDITED SENATE APPROVAL OF CONVICTED OFFENDERS TRANSFER BILL
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has transmitted the Transfer of Convicted Offenders Amendment Bill, 2026, to the Senate for consideration, requesting expedited approval.
The proposed amendment seeks to strengthen Nigeria’s legal framework for implementing prisoner-transfer agreements with other countries, including nations outside the Commonwealth.
In a letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Tinubu explained that the bill would amend the existing Transfer of Convicted Offenders Act to provide legal backing for agreements between Nigeria and other countries.
The proposed legislation would also empower the President to extend the law to countries with which Nigeria has relevant agreements through an order published in the Federal Gazette.
The bill is now before the Senate for consideration.
