President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with the United Kingdom, with a focus on security cooperation, economic development, and shared democratic values between both countries.

Tinubu made this known on Wednesday night during a State Banquet held in his honour by King Charles III at Windsor Castle, as part of his ongoing state visit.
The president described the occasion as a significant moment, noting that it reinforced long-standing ties built on shared history, mutual respect, and a common vision for progress and global stability.
“It is a profound honour to stand before you today, representing the people of Nigeria as we reaffirm the enduring bonds of friendship, history, and shared purpose,” he said.
He noted that Nigeria and the UK share common democratic principles, adding that both nations must continue to collaborate in promoting peace, prosperity, and strong institutions.
Tinubu highlighted the importance of the rule of law, tracing its origins to foundational legal traditions such as the Magna Carta, which continue to shape modern democratic governance worldwide.
He stated that Nigeria’s legal and institutional systems have been significantly influenced by British traditions, including parliamentary procedures, civil service frameworks, and judicial structures adapted to local realities.
The president emphasised that beyond institutions, the strongest connection between both nations lies in people-to-people relations, pointing to the contributions of Nigerians living in the United Kingdom across key sectors.
According to him, Nigerians in the UK have continued to make notable impacts in healthcare, business, academia, sports, and public service, further strengthening ties through human capital and cultural exchange.
He stressed that Nigeria remains committed to playing a leading role within the Commonwealth, using the platform to enhance cooperation, trade, and shared development among member states.
Tinubu also underscored the need for stronger security collaboration, noting that Nigeria is confronting complex terrorism challenges in the West African sub-region, particularly due to instability in the Sahel.
“In confronting these threats, partnership with the United Kingdom remains essential. Our partnership is vital as we address threats to regional stability and maintain peace in West Africa,” he said, expressing optimism ahead of his meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The president expressed confidence in Nigeria’s future, describing the country as a nation with a resilient, innovative, and youthful population determined to achieve its full economic and social potential.
He also expressed appreciation to the UK for its historical support during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle, recalling his personal experiences during the era of military rule.
Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening relations with the UK, expressing optimism that both countries will continue to build a stronger and mutually beneficial partnership.
In his remarks, King Charles III described Nigeria as an economic powerhouse and a cultural force with growing global influence.
He noted that Nigerians in the UK have made significant contributions across sectors, including business, healthcare, education, law, technology, and the arts.
“We are fortunate that so many people of Nigerian heritage are now at the heart of British society,” the monarch said.
The King highlighted expanding economic relations, noting increased trade, investment, and partnerships between institutions and businesses in both countries.
He also acknowledged the complex historical background between both nations, while stressing the importance of building a future based on trust, cooperation, and shared values.
The monarch further commended Nigeria’s role in promoting interfaith harmony and regional stability.
