FRSC Begins Nationwide Sallah Patrol, Warns Against Use of Expired Tyres
The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mallam Shehu Mohammed, has cautioned motorists against the use of worn-out and expired tyres, especially as many people prepare to travel for the Eid El Kabir celebration.
The Corps Marshal gave the advice in Keffi, Nasarawa State, during the commencement of a six-day Sallah Special Patrol mega rally aimed at sensitizing road users on the need to drive responsibly during the festive period.
Represented by the Corps Public Education Officer, Ohaeri Osondu, the FRSC boss advised commercial drivers at Keffi Central Park to always ensure that their vehicles are in good condition while avoiding overloading, overspeeding, and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Mallam Shehu Mohammed explained that the motor park rallies became necessary to ensure effective traffic control and curb the excesses of motorists on the highways.
The FRSC Corps Marshal also urged transport union executives to partner with the FRSC in restoring sanity on the nation’s roads.
According to him, the best way to complement the Federal Government’s huge investment in road rehabilitation and construction is by reducing road accidents to the barest minimum.
He noted that the sensitization campaign was simultaneously carried out in major motor parks across the country to guarantee the free flow of traffic during the celebration.
The Assistant Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Keffi branch, Usman Kalid, disclosed that park leaders in Keffi, Garaku, and Akwanga had held a congress last week to educate members on the importance of obeying traffic rules and regulations.
He maintained that stiffer penalties await members found driving under the influence of hard drugs or engaging in other unlawful activities.
According to him, any member who fails to comply with the rules would not be allowed to load passengers in any NURTW park and could also face suspension for several months.
He commended the FRSC for taking the campaign to transport corridors, noting that it had enlightened drivers on the best ways to drive safely during festive periods and beyond.
The sensitization rally was later extended to the Nasarawa State University gate, where motorcycle and tricycle riders were educated on the need to obey traffic lights and avoid overloading.
