Viral Tinubu-branded N5,000 note declared fake by CBN

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dismissed as false a viral image claiming the introduction of a new N5,000 banknote.

Some social media users had alleged that the apex bank released a sample of a N5,000 note featuring the image of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The image quickly gained traction online, sparking widespread reactions.
However, in a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the CBN debunked the claim, stating, “This content is fake. Let the public be guided.”
Further checks by The Nation using an AI detection tool, Hive Moderation, revealed that the viral image contains over 90 percent AI-generated material. This suggests that the image was created using artificial intelligence technology.
Artificial intelligence relies on complex computer algorithms to perform tasks typically handled by humans, such as generating images, answering questions, and writing code.
Historically, the CBN had announced plans in 2012 to introduce a N5,000 denomination, but the proposal was later withdrawn in 2022. Despite this, discussions around the introduction of such a note have continued over the years.
