Rainy Season Warning: Communities Around Kangimi Dam Face Rising Flood Risk

The Head of Communications and Strategies at African Climate Reporters, Comrade Ibrahima Yakubu, has conducted an inspection visit to Kangimi Dam in Kaduna State, North West Nigeria, to assess its current state and sensitize nearby communities on flood prevention measures.

The visit comes at the onset of the rainy season, a period often associated with increased flooding risks due to the effects of climate change and environmental degradation.
During the assessment, Yakubu urged residents living behind the dam and those along waterways to desist from dumping refuse—particularly pure water sachets, dirt, and other waste—into drainage systems. He warned that such practices block water channels and significantly raise the likelihood of flooding.
He emphasized the need for people residing in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer locations to avoid potential loss of lives and property.
Yakubu further disclosed that his team plans to visit eight vulnerable communities around the dam to educate residents on early warning signs and practical response strategies aimed at reducing the impact of possible flooding.
He also advised those living near streams and waterways to remain vigilant and adopt precautionary measures as rainfall intensifies.
While acknowledging the contributions of humanitarian bodies such as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Red Cross, and other disaster response organizations, Yakubu commended their dedication to timely interventions and the protection of lives and property.
He also praised the Kaduna State Government for its ongoing dredging efforts along Kigo roads, while recommending that similar actions be extended to Tudun Wada near the Bashama Road graveyard within the state capital.
