The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to both the Federal Government and the Plateau State Government following the abduction of a student of the University of Jos, John Arum, who was reportedly travelling to Kaduna.

In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by NANS President, Olushola Oladoja, the association strongly condemned the incident, describing it as yet another troubling example of the growing insecurity affecting students across the country.
According to the group, Arum was kidnapped while en route to Kaduna. It added that disturbing visuals allegedly showing him in captivity have surfaced online, suggesting he is being severely mistreated. The abductors are reportedly demanding a ransom of ₦30 million for his release.
NANS expressed deep concern over what it described as the slow response from authorities, warning that continued delay could heighten public anger and further weaken trust in security institutions. The association stressed the need for urgent action to ensure the student’s safe rescue.
It also called for the immediate deployment of intelligence and security resources, alongside regular updates on efforts to secure the victim’s freedom. Furthermore, NANS urged the government to adopt more decisive and comprehensive measures to tackle the rising wave of kidnappings across the country.
Warning of possible escalation, the student body stated that failure to act within the 48-hour deadline could lead to nationwide protests and disruption of academic and socio-economic activities.
NANS reaffirmed that it would not remain passive while students continue to face abductions and violence, insisting that stronger and more proactive measures are necessary to address the worsening insecurity.
