Two arrested as Ondo police intercept bus, save minor from suspected trafficking ring
Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have foiled a suspected child trafficking operation and rescued a 13-year-old girl at the Owena checkpoint.
The incident occurred on April 23, 2026, during a joint security exercise. Officers intercepted a Lagos-to-Abuja commercial Toyota Hummer bus carrying several waybills at the Owena axis.
The vehicle was driven by 59-year-old Akomolafe Tope, while 48-year-old Sunday Ismaila served as the conductor.
According to security sources, suspicion was raised during routine checks when the young girl was found in the company of the two men under unclear circumstances.
During initial interrogation, the suspects failed to provide credible information regarding the girl’s identity, origin, or destination, heightening concerns of possible trafficking.
Both men were immediately arrested, while the victim was rescued and placed under protective care.
The matter has been transferred to the command’s Gender-Based Offences Unit for further investigation. Police authorities confirmed that the suspects will be charged upon conclusion of the investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, stated that the successful rescue highlights the importance of intelligence sharing and coordinated security efforts in saving lives. He reiterated the command’s zero tolerance for crimes against children and vulnerable persons.
“We will ensure anyone found culpable faces the full weight of the law,” Lawal said.
He also urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and advised transport operators to properly document and verify passengers, particularly minors, to prevent aiding criminal activities.
Residents were encouraged to report any suspicious movement involving children to the nearest security agency.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, while strengthening collaboration with relevant agencies to combat human trafficking.
