The Dutse Emirate Development Association (DEDA) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Lieutenant Colonel Faruk Umar Usman of the Nigerian Army, who was killed during counter-terrorism operations in Borno State.

In a statement issued Thursday and signed by its Public Relations Officer II, Muhammad Musbahu Basirka, DEDA described the late officer, an indigene of Birnin Kudu in Jigawa State, as a courageous soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice defending Nigeria against insurgents in the North East.
The association confirmed that Lieutenant Colonel Usman lost his life while participating in ongoing military operations targeting Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists.
“The gallant officer paid the supreme price in defense of the nation. His passing is a painful loss to his family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the people of Jigawa State, the Dutse Emirate, and Nigeria as a whole,” the statement read.
DEDA highlighted that the officer was widely respected for his courage, discipline, and compassion, earning admiration from both soldiers and civilians alike.
“Communities across the North East consistently recognized his bravery and commitment to protecting them from repeated terrorist attacks,” the association added.
Residents under constant threat of insurgency viewed him as more than a military commander, seeing him as a symbol of hope and security.
The association also lauded his humanitarian efforts, noting that he often used personal resources to assist displaced civilians and support colleagues in need. “His humility and selfless service won him respect wherever he served,” DEDA said, emphasizing that his death during the holy month of Ramadan underscores the depth of his sacrifice.
DEDA extended condolences to the officer’s family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the government and people of Jigawa State led by Governor Umar Namadi, as well as the residents of Birnin Kudu and the wider Muslim community.
The group also urged the Jigawa State Government to honor and immortalize Lieutenant Colonel Usman in recognition of his service and sacrifice to the nation.
