The Borno State Government has launched 20 electric buses for public transport to help residents cope with rising petrol prices.

This was confirmed in a statement by Mr. Dauda Illiya, spokesperson to Governor Babagana Zulum, on Thursday in Maiduguri.
According to Illiya, this initiative is part of a larger project inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu on December 20, 2025, which also included 3,000 electric bicycles, 500 electric tricycles, and 100 electric vehicles aimed at improving the state’s transport system.
The rollout, which began on April 3, includes 17 buses with 49 seats, two 37-seaters, and one 28-seater. The vehicles are currently operating on major routes in Maiduguri and surrounding areas to ease commuting challenges.
Illiya noted that the fully air-conditioned buses are energy-efficient and can travel over 400 km on a single charge. He also highlighted that the governor has established the country’s largest electric vehicle charging terminal, capable of charging up to 50 vehicles simultaneously.
To support affordability, the Borno Express Transport Service has been instructed to charge a subsidised fare of N50 per trip. Early feedback indicates that the intervention has reduced congestion and enhanced access to reliable, low-cost transportation.
The initiative also forms part of the state government’s drive to promote green energy, modernize public transport, and provide relief to vulnerable residents.
