Iran Maps New Shipping Routes Amid Hormuz Strait Tensions
Iran announced on Thursday alternative routes for vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz, citing the threat of sea mines in the main shipping lanes.
Tehran has agreed to temporarily reopen the strategic strait, which normally carries one-fifth of the world’s oil, under a two-week truce.
“All ships intending to transit the Strait of Hormuz are hereby notified that, to comply with maritime safety principles and avoid potential collisions with sea mines, they should follow the alternative routes provided,” said Iran’s Revolutionary Guards in a statement reported by local media.
The statement included detailed instructions for entry and exit through the new routes.
The United States and Iran reached a two-week ceasefire from Tuesday to Wednesday, just under an hour before US President Donald Trump’s deadline to take military action against Iran if it did not comply with demands to reopen the strait.
Since early March, Tehran had effectively blocked this crucial waterway, causing global energy prices to surge.
