Israel-Lebanon Truce Set to Begin as Trump Pushes for Historic Peace Talks
United States President, Donald Trump, has announced that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to a 10-day ceasefire.
According to him, the truce will begin at 2100 GMT and will last for 10 days. He also revealed plans to invite Lebanese and Israeli leaders for peace talks.
Optimism has been growing over a possible agreement to end the war involving Iran.
The U.S.-Israeli war with Iran extended into Lebanon on March 2, when Iran-backed Hezbollah launched attacks on Israel in support of Tehran. This triggered an Israeli military offensive in Lebanon, just 15 months after the last major conflict between Israeli forces and Hezbollah.
Lebanese authorities report that Israeli attacks have killed more than 2,100 people since March 2 and displaced over 1.2 million residents.
On the Israeli side, Hezbollah attacks have killed two civilians, while 13 Israeli soldiers have died in Lebanon during the same period, according to Israeli sources.
An Israeli security official disclosed that the military does not intend to withdraw its forces from southern Lebanon during the ceasefire.
Israeli troops expanded their operations in southern Lebanon after Hezbollah joined the wider Iran conflict by firing missiles into Israel on March 2. Two days later, residents were ordered to evacuate villages south of the Litani River—an area covering about 8% of Lebanese territory, which Israeli authorities consider a Hezbollah stronghold.
Since then, Israeli forces have destroyed several villages in the region, stating that the objective is to establish a “buffer zone” to protect northern Israeli communities from Hezbollah attacks.
The Israeli security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added that troops stationed in the buffer zone would remain throughout the ceasefire period.
Senior Hezbollah lawmaker Hassan Fadlallah confirmed that the group had been informed about a possible short-term ceasefire by Iran’s ambassador to Beirut.
When asked whether Hezbollah would respect the truce, Fadlallah stated that it would depend entirely on Israel halting all forms of aggression.
In a follow-up post on Truth Social, Trump said he would invite Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to the White House for what he described as “the first meaningful peace talks” between both countries since 1983.
Trump expressed confidence that both sides are interested in peace and believes a resolution could be reached quickly.
