Opposition heavyweights converge in Ibadan, signaling a potential grand alliance ahead of 2027 elections.
Nigeria’s opposition landscape may be on the verge of a major shift as leading political figures gathered in Ibadan for high-level discussions that could shape alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Prominent actors including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, David Mark, and Rauf Aregbesola were among those in attendance, reflecting a coordinated effort to strengthen opposition unity.
The summit, hosted by Seyi Makinde, attracted a wide range of political stakeholders cutting across different parties. Other notable attendees included Rabiu Kwankwaso, Babangida Aliyu, Abdulfatah Ahmed, Jerry Gana, and Olagunsoye Oyinlola, highlighting the scale and diversity of the emerging bloc.
Although officially described as a forum to enhance cooperation among opposition leaders, the underlying objective appeared clear—strategic positioning ahead of the next electoral cycle. Deliberations reportedly focused on building a cohesive political front, with particular emphasis on strengthening platforms such as the African Democratic Congress as a viable vehicle for coalition politics.
Insiders suggest that while several key figures may be nursing presidential ambitions, there is growing awareness that internal divisions have historically weakened the opposition. As a result, there is increasing determination among participants to close ranks and present a more united front.
In his address, Makinde stressed the importance of safeguarding Nigeria’s democratic framework, urging political leaders to move beyond partisan interests and collaborate in strengthening democratic institutions. His message echoed the broader tone of the meeting—that the future of Nigeria’s political balance depends on collective action rather than individual pursuits.
As discussions continue behind closed doors, the Ibadan meeting could represent the early stages of a formidable opposition alliance—one capable of reshaping the country’s political dynamics ahead of 2027.
