2027 Polls: Political Parties Meet INEC Deadline for Membership Register Submission
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that all 22 registered political parties in Nigeria have submitted their membership registers in compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC disclosed on Friday that the political parties completed the submission process on May 8, two days before the extended deadline of May 10.
According to the commission, the deadline extension was granted after political parties raised concerns during a meeting held on March 24, 2026. The initial deadline of April 21 was later shifted to May 10 to allow parties adequate time to compile their registers and conduct their primaries.
The commission stated that political parties are expected to hold their primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026. It further explained that the law requires parties to submit their membership registers at least 21 days before conducting primaries.
INEC noted that the submitted registers would now undergo verification in line with legal requirements.
“The submission followed the extension granted by the Commission after political parties raised concerns during a meeting on Tuesday, March 24, 2026,” the commission stated.
The electoral body also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections in 2027.
