Panic as Three-Storey Student Hostel Crumbles in Oko
A hostel building has collapsed near the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, in Anambra State, trapping several students beneath the rubble as emergency responders continue rescue operations.
The three-storey building, identified as Elite Five Star Lodge and located beside Tonimas Filling Station in Amokpala, Oko, reportedly caved in on Sunday night while students were inside.
Witnesses said a loud noise was heard before the structure collapsed, prompting residents and students to rush to the scene.Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said a police-led joint security team swiftly responded after receiving a distress call. According to him, officers secured the area and coordinated rescue efforts alongside other security agencies. The Anambra State Fire Service and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) also joined the operation.
Ikenga said some injured victims have been rescued from the debris and taken to a hospital in Oko for treatment, while efforts continue to reach others who may still be trapped. He noted that the number of casualties or affected persons has not yet been confirmed and urged residents to remain calm, avoid spreading unverified information, and keep away from the scene to allow emergency workers unrestricted access. Further updates, he said, will be released as verified information becomes available.
