UNILAG student tells court lecturer pinned her down and raped her in campus office
A 20-year-old student of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Monday told a Lagos court that her lecturer, Dr.
Samuel Obinna Ojogbo, raped her in his office on the university campus. The student, while testifying before Justice Oyindamola Ogala at the Lagos State Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, stated that “the defendant pinned me down and raped me on that day.”
Dr. Ojogbo, 53, is facing charges of rape and sexual assault filed by the Lagos State Government over an incident alleged to have occurred on August 22, 2025, within the UNILAG premises.
The prosecution counsel, Ademola Azeez, informed the court that the alleged offences contravened Sections 260 and 263(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
During cross-examination, defence counsel Bidemi Ademola-Bello, SAN, questioned the student regarding statements she made to the police and the clothes she wore on the day of the alleged incident.
The witness confirmed that she made statements at the Bariga Police Station on August 27 and 28, as well as at the Gender Unit on September 2. The statements were admitted in evidence by the court.
She also said she could not identify a photograph of the alleged crime scene presented by the defence, prompting the judge to reject the photograph as evidence because no additional witness was available to authenticate it.
The student further testified that a doctor at the university medical centre carried out a swab test and prescribed medication after she reported the incident.
She denied claims by the defence that she washed her clothes in an attempt to destroy evidence connected to the case.
Justice Ogala subsequently adjourned the matter until May 25 for continuation of trial.
