16 Months in Chains: Abuja Man Nabbed Over Sister’s Ordeal
Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have arrested a man accused of chaining his sister and holding her captive inside an apartment for one year and four months.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Mohammed, disclosed on Monday that 35-year-old Chinedu Aniekoku was arrested after detectives forced their way into a residence in Katampe on May 12, 2026.
According to the police, operatives responded to a distress call and moved to the location. Upon arrival, Aniekoku allegedly prevented them from entering the apartment. However, officers eventually gained access and discovered his sister, Mrs. Grace Aniekoku, chained and severely emaciated.
“The victim was also found in an extremely poor sanitary condition, having been confined for a prolonged period under inhumane circumstances,” CP Mohammed said at the command headquarters.
The police said the woman was immediately freed from the chains and taken to a hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly took his sister to an undisclosed location about two years ago. CP Mohammed stated that her confinement may have been intended to stop her from seeking help or asking questions regarding her missing child.
Investigators are currently working to trace and rescue the child. The Commissioner added that Aniekoku remains in police custody while investigations continue and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of inquiries.
