FG Unveils Major NYSC Overhaul, Appoints Civilian Leadership

The Federal Government has approved major reforms to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), including replacing its leadership with a civilian after 53 years of military-led administration, while the military will continue to provide security for corps members across the country.

The reforms were approved during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held in Abuja on Monday. They are aimed at transforming the NYSC into a skills-focused and productivity-driven institution that aligns with the Federal Government’s economic agenda.
Among the key reforms are a technology-driven call-up process, risk-sensitive deployment to enhance the safety of corps members, and a redesigned six-week orientation programme with greater emphasis on leadership, entrepreneurship, digital skills, and specialised career streams.
Other approved measures include skills-based primary assignments that align with corps members’ academic backgrounds and career paths, a modern governance structure with civilian operational leadership while the military continues to provide security support, improved orientation camp standards through a national grading and certification system, a new graduation ceremony to replace the traditional Passing Out Parade, and a redesigned NYSC uniform that reflects professionalism and national pride.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, and the Minister of Youth, Ayodele Olawande, to amend the NYSC Act and its regulations to incorporate the approved reforms, paving the way for the immediate implementation of the new framework.
