Labour Unions Demand Action on Security, Warn of Possible Nationwide Shutdown

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have threatened to embark on a nationwide strike in protest against the worsening insecurity across the country.

President of the NLC, Joe Ajaero, made this known on Monday in Geneva, Switzerland, during a joint media briefing held on the sidelines of the ongoing 114th International Labour Conference.
The two labour centres also urged the Federal Government to commence preparations for the renegotiation of the National Minimum Wage, which is expected to take effect in July next year.
They dismissed claims by some state governors that discussions with workers had already begun on a proposed ₦100,000 minimum wage.
According to the labour leaders, such claims do not reflect the current state of engagements concerning workers’ welfare and remuneration.
They maintained that any review of the minimum wage must follow due legislative processes and be based on negotiations involving all relevant stakeholders to arrive at an acceptable figure.
