Police Drag Woman to Court Over Alleged Assault, Cutlass Injury on Husband in Akure

The Ondo State Police Command has arraigned a woman, identified as Mary Olatunde, before a court for allegedly assaulting and inflicting severe injuries on her husband during a domestic dispute in Akure, the state capital.

The police said the suspect, who resides at Ilado along Igbatoro Road in Akure, was arrested and prosecuted following an incident that reportedly occurred on June 2, 2026, leaving her husband, Olatunde Julius, with a deep cut on his left hand.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the matter was reported to the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Unit at the Command Headquarters in Akure on June 3, prompting detectives to immediately commence an investigation.
Jimoh disclosed that preliminary findings showed that the couple had engaged in a domestic altercation at about 2:30 p.m. on the day of the incident, during which the suspect allegedly assaulted her husband and used a cutlass to inflict a serious injury on him.
“The victim was immediately taken for medical treatment, where the extent of his injuries was assessed and documented.
“Investigators subsequently obtained statements from both parties and gathered relevant evidence to aid the investigation,” the PPRO stated.
He noted that following the conclusion of investigations and the establishment of a prima facie case, the suspect was arrested and arraigned before a competent court for prosecution in accordance with the law.
The police spokesperson reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling all forms of domestic violence and ensuring justice for victims.
He stressed that domestic violence remains a serious threat to the safety, dignity and well-being of individuals, adding that offenders would be held accountable regardless of gender, social status or relationship with the victim.
He also urged members of the public to promptly report incidents of domestic violence, abuse and other gender-related offences to the nearest police station or the Gender-Based Violence Unit for immediate intervention and legal action.
Jimoh assured residents that the police command would continue to professionally investigate and diligently prosecute all reported cases while sustaining efforts to protect vulnerable persons and uphold justice across the state. (Tribune News).
