Tragedy in Kebbi: FUBK 300-Level Student Killed in Machete Attack at Off-Campus Hostel

The Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK) has confirmed the death of Zaharadeen Nuhu, a 300-level Biochemistry student, who was allegedly killed by suspected thieves during an attack on his off-campus hostel in Kalgo Local Government Area of Kebbi State.

The university’s Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Ibrahim Magawata, disclosed the incident in a circular issued on Thursday and made available to journalists in Birnin Kebbi.
Student Dies from Machete Injuries
According to Magawata, the deceased, who was from Niger State, was attacked by a group of suspected hoodlums at his private hostel residence in Kalgo.
He reportedly sustained severe machete wounds during the attack.
“He was taken to hospital but sadly passed away early this morning,” the dean stated. “It is with a heavy heart and total submission to the will of Allah that the university management announces the death of our dear student, Zaharadeen Nuhu, a 300-level student of the Department of Biochemistry.”
The student was laid to rest on Thursday following funeral prayers held at the Mosque of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Birnin Kebbi.
University Tightens Off-Campus Security
Magawata said the university management had reported the matter to the Nigeria Police Force, Kalgo Division, and that investigations were already underway. He added that security patrols had been intensified in Kalgo and other off-campus communities where students reside.
He further disclosed that the university had scheduled a meeting with private hostel owners in Kalgo to enforce stronger security measures, including better lighting and the engagement of night guards.
The dean urged students to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, while warning against the spread of unverified information capable of causing panic.
He also advised students to avoid late-night movements, travel in groups where necessary, and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to security agencies.
“The university management communicates with the family, friends, coursemates, and the entire student community over the loss, and prays for the repose of the deceased’s soul,” Magawata said.
FUBK reiterated its commitment to the safety and welfare of students as police continue investigations into the killing.
