The Oyo State Government has declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a work-free day to commemorate the Islamic New Year, Hijrah 1448AH, in recognition of the importance of the occasion to the Muslim community.

The announcement was made in a statement by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who said the decision underscores the government’s recognition of the historical and spiritual significance of the Hijrah calendar.
According to him, the Hijrah commemorates the migration of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622AD, a landmark event in Islamic history.
He stated: “The Hijrah marks the migration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina in 622AD, and is considered a significant event in Islamic history.
“As a gesture of respect and solidarity with the Muslim community, we have declared tomorrow, Tuesday, 16th June, 2026, a work-free day in the state.”
Oyelade urged residents of Oyo State to take advantage of the public holiday to offer prayers for peace, unity, and prosperity in the state and across Nigeria.
He also encouraged citizens to reflect on the values associated with the Hijrah, emphasizing the importance of strengthening communal ties and promoting mutual understanding.
“The Hijrah is a time for reflection, prayer, and community spirit. Let us come together on this day to pray for peace, unity, and prosperity in our state and our nation,” he added.
In a similar development, the Borno State Government also declared Tuesday, June 16, 2026, a public holiday to mark the beginning of the Islamic calendar year 1448AH (1st Muharram).
The declaration was contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, following approval by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum.
The Borno State Government said the holiday would provide residents the opportunity to observe the Islamic New Year and reflect on values such as unity, tolerance, justice, and peaceful coexistence.
Authorities further urged citizens to use the period to pray for national stability, democratic advancement, and greater harmony among Nigeria’s diverse communities.
The Hijri calendar, which follows lunar cycles, is approximately 11 to 12 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar. As a result, Islamic New Year celebrations occur on different dates each year.
Government offices, schools, and public institutions across Borno State are expected to observe the holiday.
