Supreme Court seals Emefiele’s asset forfeiture battle.

The Supreme Court has upheld the final forfeiture of $2.045 million and several properties linked to former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, to the Federal Government.

In a unanimous judgment delivered on Friday, the apex court overturned an earlier ruling of the Court of Appeal in Lagos, which had nullified the forfeiture order granted by the Federal High Court.
The decision restores the judgment of the Federal High Court, which ordered the permanent forfeiture of the assets following an application filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
According to the EFCC, the forfeited assets include seven choice properties located in Lagos and Delta states, as well as $2.045 million allegedly linked to Emefiele. The anti-graft agency maintained that the assets were proceeds of unlawful activities.
The Supreme Court’s ruling brings the legal dispute over the assets to a close, marking the end of the appeal process and affirming the final forfeiture of the money and properties to the Federal Government.
