Banyana Break Falcons’ Historic World Cup Streak

Nigeria’s Super Falcons will miss the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time in history after losing 2-1 to South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in their 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup playoff in Casablanca on Thursday night.

The defeat brings to an end Nigeria’s proud record of featuring in every edition of the tournament since the inaugural Women’s World Cup in 1991.
How the Game Unfolded
The 10-time African champions dominated possession in the first half at the Moulay Rachid Stadium but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against a disciplined South African defence.
Banyana Banyana took the lead in the 56th minute when Thembi Kgatlana finished a swift counter-attack to put South Africa ahead.
Captain Refiloe Jane then doubled the advantage 13 minutes from time with a composed finish, leaving the Super Falcons facing a difficult task to recover.
Nigeria were handed a lifeline late in the game after Jane handled the ball inside the box. The South African captain received a second yellow card and was sent off.
Substitute Christy Ucheibe converted the resulting penalty to reduce the deficit to 2-1, but there was not enough time remaining for the Super Falcons to complete a comeback.
What It Means
The defeat ends Nigeria’s qualification campaign, while South Africa advance to the inter-confederation playoffs alongside Ghana’s Black Queens, who also secured their place on Thursday.
For the Super Falcons, it will be the first time they will watch a Women’s World Cup from home since the tournament began 36 years ago.
The coach and players are expected to address the media later today as the Nigeria Football Federation begins a review of the team’s qualifying campaign.
