Penalty Drama: Algeria Claim WAFCON Third Place

Algeria secured the bronze medal at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after defeating hosts Morocco 3-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the third-place match.

Morocco took the lead through Kautar Azraf, whose first-half goal gave the Atlas Lionesses a 1-0 advantage at the break.
The hosts appeared to have doubled their lead in the second half when Maryam Atiq found the net, but the goal was disallowed, leaving Morocco with a narrow advantage.
Algeria continued to push for an equaliser and were rewarded in the 83rd minute when Lina Boussaha scored to level the match at 1-1.
Neither side could find a winning goal before the final whistle, sending the bronze-medal contest into a penalty shootout.
Algeria kept their composure from the spot, winning 3-2 to secure third place and the bronze medal at the tournament.
The final is scheduled for Sunday between Cameroon and Malawi.
