The President of the Nigerian Baptist Convention, Reverend Olusola Idowu, has called on youths not to lose hope, but to take advantage of available opportunities and prepare adequately for leadership positions across all levels of governance.

Speaking during the retirement service of his predecessor, Reverend Israel Akanji, held at the First Baptist Church Garki, Abuja, Reverend Idowu stated that the convention has strengthened its Youth Ministry to build capacity to navigate future challenges.

He further advised young people to draw inspiration from some church leaders who have served the nation diligently through both government and ecclesiastical roles.

Commending Reverend Akanji for his 42 years of dedicated service in the Lord’s vineyard, the NBC President noted that Akanji’s tenure as a pastor in Lagos, Abuja, and as a convention president brought immense spiritual growth to both the church and the nation.

He also reminded those in positions of authority to serve God and humanity faithfully, emphasising that great rewards await diligent servants.

In his tribute, the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission, Bishop Stephen Adegbite, praised Reverend Akanji for driving transformation during his tenure representing the North Central zone on the commission.

Bishop Adegbite described Reverend Akanji as a prudent manager of resources whose kindness touched the lives of both Christians and non-Christians across the society.

He urged the leadership of the Nigerian Baptist Convention to consider raising its minister retirement age beyond 65, to give experienced leaders more time to mentor the next generation.

Similarly, Mrs Adenike Takpatore, wife of the Pastor-in-Charge at First Baptist Church Garki, Abuja, noted that Reverend Akanji’s 22-year ministry in the church profoundly impacted numerous families.

Mrs Takpatore added that despite his demanding schedule, Reverend Akanji effectively ran his home while offering strong support to families facing personal challenges.

In his remarks, John Cardinal Onaiyekan described Reverend Akanji as a tireless peacemaker, highlighting his active involvement in the Inter-Religious Council to foster dialogue and harmony between Christians and Muslims in Nigeria.

Over twenty church leaders from various denominations paid tribute to Reverend Akanji, praising his steadfast dedication to evangelism and his continuous support for the less privileged.
