Kogi Politics: FORIJA Calls On Stakeholders To Rise Above Political Rivalry

Media practitioners have called on the relevant authorities in Kogi State to take urgent and decisive steps to address the growing concerns over political thuggery in Kogi East ahead of the 2027 general election.

The journalists under the umbrella of the Forum of Igala Journalists (FORIJA) expressed concern that political violence and the activities of political thugs could undermine peace, security and democratic participation in the area if not properly addressed.

In statement signed by the group Secretary General, Yusuf Akogu, urged political actors, community leaders, security agencies and other stakeholders to work together to prevent violence before, during and after political activities.

The group specifically raised a concern over continuous rise of political intolerance in the region.

‘A meeting of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ejule, Ofu Local Government Area of Kogi State, was thrown into confusion following an attack by suspected political thugs, leaving one party member injured’.

‘The incident reportedly occurred while the meeting was in progress, forcing participants and other residents to flee the venue for safety after several shots were allegedly fired into the air’.

‘One of the party members was said to have sustained injuries during the ensuing stampede and confusion. He was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital, where he is reportedly receiving medical attention’.

The forum insisted that no political interest should be allowed to endanger the lives and property of citizens or create fear among residents.

It therefore called on security agencies to investigate reported incidents of political violence and ensure that anyone found responsible is dealt with according to the law, irrespective of political affiliation.

The statement also appealed to political parties and their supporters to conduct their activities peacefully and discourage the recruitment, financing and mobilisation of youths for violent purposes.

It further called for greater engagement with youths in Kogi East, noting that employment opportunities, skills development, education and constructive political participation could help reduce their vulnerability to manipulation by individuals seeking to use them for violent political activities.

The forum urged traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations and community associations to intensify peace-building efforts and encourage political tolerance among their people.

“Kogi East belongs to all its residents and that political differences should never become a reason for violence; calling on the relevant authorities to strengthen security and ensure that citizens can participate freely and safely in political activities”.

FORIJA reaffirmed its commitment to peace, unity, responsible citizenship and sustainable community development in Kogi East, and urged all stakeholders to place the interests and security of the people above political rivalry.
