FRSC Confirms Death Of 16 Passengers In Kogi Auto Crash
At least 16 persons have lost their lives in a tragic road accident that occurred on Friday along the Lokoja-Okene Highway in Kogi State.
The incident reportedly happened at Aku village near Osara at about 9:20 a.m. on Friday.
The Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lawal Fagge, confirmed the development.
Fagge disclosed during a telephone conversation that the crash involved a Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BUU 17 ZD travelling from Jos, Plateau State, to Lagos.
According to him, the vehicle was carrying 22 passengers, comprising 21 men and one woman.
He explained that fatigue and excessive speeding caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which veered off the road and plunged beneath a bridge.
The FRSC commander stated that 16 passengers, including 15 men and the only female occupant, died instantly at the scene of the accident.
He added that FRSC officials in Kogi State responded promptly after receiving a distress call and rescued six passengers who sustained various injuries.
The injured victims were taken to medical facilities in Osara and the Specialist Hospital in Lokoja for treatment, while the remains of the deceased were deposited at the Ankuri Mortuary in Lokoja.
Fagge urged motorists and other road users to comply with traffic regulations and avoid speeding as well as fatigue while travelling, in order to prevent needless loss of lives on the highways.
