Court Grants Travel Agent Bail in Alleged N572,000 Visa Fraud Case
A 41-year-old travel agent, Ismail Monsuru, was on Friday arraigned before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court over allegations of obtaining N572,000 under the pretext of securing a Canadian visa.
Monsuru is facing a two-count charge bordering on fraud and stealing. He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
According to the prosecutor, ASP Foluke Adedosu, the defendant allegedly collected the sum from one Musa Togunde in February at No. 8, Togunde Street, Gbagi area of Ibadan, promising to procure a Canadian visa for him.
Adedosu told the court that the defendant failed to secure the visa as promised and allegedly diverted the money for personal use.
She stated that the defendant knowingly made false representations before obtaining the money.
The prosecutor added that the alleged offences contravene Sections 390(9) and 419 of the Criminal Law of Oyo State, 2000.
Presiding Magistrate, Mrs A. T. Oyediji, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N300,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The matter was adjourned until June 15 for hearing.
