Akpabio Marks Democracy Day, Seeks Citizens’ Support in Tackling Insecurity
The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, has urged Nigerians to embrace unity, remain vigilant, and actively participate in nation-building as the country celebrates 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
In a Democracy Day message signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Hon.
Akpabio noted that Nigeria’s democratic journey remains a testament to endurance and perseverance despite years of agitations and political challenges.
Speaking on behalf of the 10th National Assembly, he congratulated Nigerians on sustaining democracy for nearly three decades, acknowledging that while mistakes had been made along the way, the nation would ultimately reach its desired destination with the continued support of its citizens.
He urged Nigerians to remain committed to democratic governance and resist efforts by forces seeking to undermine the nation’s democratic process.
According to him, democracy should go beyond periodic elections and be rooted in accountability, justice, compassion, and service to the common good.
The Senate President also called on young Nigerians to play active roles in the nation’s political process, stressing that the youth remain the foundation of future leadership.
“As we commemorate June 12, I wish to encourage the youth not to sit on the fence but to become active participants in the nation’s political activities. The youths constitute the fulcrum of those who will succeed us tomorrow,” he said.
He further urged Nigerians to recommit themselves to the ideals of freedom, transparency, accountable governance, social justice, and active citizen participation, particularly among the younger generation.
On the issue of insecurity, Akpabio appealed to Nigerians to unite and cooperate with government efforts aimed at addressing the security challenges confronting the country.
He assured citizens that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to combating insecurity and securing the release of all persons currently held captive.
“I urge every Nigerian to support the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in its efforts to fight terrorism. We understand the pains you are going through, but the government is not resting on its oars. Hopefully, we shall overcome this current challenge and all will be well with Nigeria,” he stated.
