Anosike Fights Back: APC chairman demands ₦5bn damages over corruption allegations
The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State, Senator Emma Anosike, has petitioned the Nigeria Police following allegations made against him and his office by an expelled APC member in the state, Mr.
Arinze Awogu.Awogu had alleged that Senator Anosike embezzled more than ₦1 billion received through donations and grants from the national leadership of the party.
On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, Senator Anosike’s legal team launched a two-pronged legal action against Sir Arinzechukwu Awogu, demanding ₦5 billion in damages and petitioning the Inspector General of Police over allegations of cyberstalking and cyberbullying.
In a demand letter dated June 16, 2026, Chief Clems Ezika, SAN, accused Awogu of granting what he described as a “false, malicious and misleading” interview on June 13, which was subsequently published on Igbere TV and circulated across other media and social media platforms.
According to the lawyers, Awogu alleged in the interview that Anosike misappropriated over ₦1 billion belonging to the party within four months of assuming office as chairman, received money in both dollars and naira from opposition figures to field weak candidates, and traded party tickets ahead of elections for personal benefit.
The legal team maintained that the allegations had severely damaged Anosike’s reputation and goodwill. They demanded that Awogu retract the interview, remove the publications, and publish a retraction in three national newspapers, as well as on YouTube and WhatsApp platforms, within seven days. The lawyers also demanded payment of ₦5 billion in damages, warning that failure to comply would result in legal action.
In a separate petition to the Inspector General of Police, the lawyers called for an investigation into the matter as a case of cyberstalking and cyberbullying, urging authorities to prosecute Awogu. They argued that the publication exposed their client to fear, potential violence, and reputational harm.
The petition highlighted Anosike’s political career, noting that he served as a member of the House of Representatives for Anambra East/West from 1999 to 2003, became a senator in 2003, currently serves as Chairman of the Anambra-Imo River Basin Authority, and was formerly the deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The lawyers stated that such “outlandish and malicious” allegations could cause significant damage to his public image.
Awogu, who was recently expelled from the APC state chapter, served as the APC Anambra North Zonal Chairman until his expulsion. The party noted that he has repeatedly sought to present himself to the public as the state treasurer. He reportedly made the remarks while attending a stakeholders’ meeting convened to discuss the direction of the party in Anambra State.
Party chieftains have also commended the state chairman’s action, saying it would serve as a deterrent to individuals who seek to malign the character of others without evidence.
