Nmecha’s magic touch sends Germany into the World Cup knockout stage with a dramatic stoppage-time winner.

Les Éléphants of Côte d’Ivoire, buoyed by their 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their opening World Cup Group E match, took an early lead against Germany on Saturday night and adopted a resilient approach to frustrate the European giants.

However, Nigerian-German midfielder Felix Nmecha emerged as the decisive figure in the 94th minute.
Interestingly, his Igbo surname translates to “Finishing” or “Completion,” and while he did not score the winning goal himself, he played the crucial role in sealing Germany’s victory.
Outstanding throughout the encounter, Nmecha remained determined to influence the outcome. Deep into the six minutes of added time, he delivered a precise pass to substitute Denis Undav. The Stuttgart striker, who had earlier scored the equaliser in the 68th minute, calmly beat goalkeeper Yahia Fofana once again to secure a dramatic late winner.
The victory ensures Germany’s place in the World Cup knockout stage for the first time since lifting the trophy in 2014.
Credit must also go to the current Ivorian side, which continues to pursue a milestone that eluded some of the country’s greatest footballers, including Didier Drogba, Yaya Touré, Kolo Touré and Salomon Kalou — reaching the knockout phase of a World Cup.
With their second consecutive victory of the tournament, following a 7-1 demolition of Curaçao in their opening match, Germany advance with a perfect six points.
How The Match Unfolded
The four-time world champions endured a difficult evening after falling behind to Franck Kessie’s 30th-minute strike. Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann turned to his bench in search of inspiration, and Denis Undav answered the call.
Undav first levelled the score in the 68th minute, finishing smartly from fellow substitute Nadiem Amiri’s cross. He then struck again in stoppage time to hand Côte d’Ivoire a heartbreaking defeat.
The forward had also scored once and supplied two assists after coming off the bench in Germany’s opening win over Curaçao.
Alongside Lionel Messi, Undav now has three goals at this World Cup.
Despite the defeat, Côte d’Ivoire remain in contention for qualification and can advance with a victory over tournament debutants Curaçao in their final group match.
Emerse Faé’s side impressed with their energy and direct attacking play in Toronto, though Germany created the clearer opportunities.
Germany thought they had taken the lead in the 22nd minute when Aleksandar Pavlovic headed home from a corner, but the effort was ruled out for a foul on goalkeeper Fofana.
The Ivorians then struck first. Exciting 19-year-old winger Yan Diomande set up Manchester United’s Amad Diallo, whose effort was blocked by Nathaniel Brown, only for Kessie to react quickest and convert the rebound.
Frustration For Germany
Germany’s frustrations deepened when Kai Havertz had a goal ruled out after Jamal Musiala was adjudged to have fouled Emmanuel Agbadou in the build-up.
Côte d’Ivoire also missed opportunities to extend their lead, with Christ Inao Oulai and Kessie both failing to capitalize on promising chances.
Those missed opportunities ultimately proved costly.
Fofana produced important saves to deny Brown and Amiri late on, but he could do little to stop Undav’s decisive finish. The striker expertly controlled Nmecha’s pass and turned before slotting home to shatter Ivorian hopes in the dying moments.
Nagelsmann’s Inspired Changes Rescue Germany
Germany had dazzled in their opening match against Curaçao, recording the biggest victory of the tournament’s opening round.
However, a confident Côte d’Ivoire side presented a far sterner challenge.
Diomande, who has been linked with Liverpool, displayed impressive pace and skill on the left wing. Alongside Amad Diallo, Kessie and 20-year-old Oulai, he consistently troubled a German defence that has managed just one clean sheet in its last six matches.
Ultimately, Germany’s superior squad depth made the difference.
Trailing 1-0, Nagelsmann introduced Jamie Leweling, Amiri and Undav in a triple substitution in the 60th minute. Eight minutes later, Amiri and Undav combined for the equaliser.
Undav then completed the comeback with his second goal of the night, taking his tally to nine goals in just 11 appearances for Germany and strengthening his case for a starting role.
The result also helps Germany move beyond the disappointment of their group-stage exits in 2018 and 2022.
Despite the defeat, Côte d’Ivoire can take considerable encouragement from a spirited display against one of the tournament favourites.

Germany will conclude their Group E campaign against Ecuador in New Jersey on June 25, while Côte d’Ivoire face Curaçao in Philadelphia at the same time.
