Senate to Tinubu: Act Tough on South Africa Over Xenophobic Killings

The Nigerian Senate,wants President Bola Tinubu to cut diplomatic relations with South Africa over the continued killing of Nigerians and other foreign nationals in xenophobic attacks.
The resolution was sequel to a motion on the xenophobic attacks against Nigerians, sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong (Cross River South).
Speaking during the debate, Senator Abdul Ningi (Bauchi Central) said the Senate, as the people’s chamber, could not remain silent while Nigerians are being killed openly in South Africa.
He stressed that Nigerians have the right to live and work in other countries, adding that mere expressions of concern would not solve the problem.
“Talking and lamenting will not help. Let us sever relations with South Africa. There must be action,” Ningi said.
Also contributing, Senator Babangida Hussaini (Jigawa North West) lamented that Nigerians are being vilified and killed not only in South Africa, stressing that Nigeria’s foreign policy should be strengthened to effectively address the situation.
Senator Adams Oshiomhole called on President Tinubu to nationalise South African business interests in Nigeria, including MTN, Stanbic IBTC Bank and MultiChoice, and channel the proceeds towards compensating Nigerians who have lost properties in South Africa due to xenophobic attacks.
Other lawmakers, including Senate Chief Whip Mohammed Monguno (Borno North), also condemned the persistent attacks on Nigerians and the destruction of their businesses in South Africa, urging the Federal Government to take decisive action.
