Messi Breaks Down as Spain Ends Argentina’s Historic Dream

Lionel Messi could not hide his emotions after Argentina’s dream of retaining the FIFA World Cup title ended in heartbreak, as Spain defeated the defending champions 1-0 in Sunday’s final at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, United States.

Despite inspiring Argentina throughout the tournament with a series of outstanding performances, the 39-year-old captain was left in tears as he received his runners-up medal, falling short of becoming the first men’s team since Brazil in 1962 to win consecutive World Cup titles.
Spain secured their second World Cup crown thanks to Ferran Torres, whose goal just 37 seconds into the second period of extra time sealed victory for La Furia Roja. “They were better, to be honest. We lost the game, and we accept that. That doesn’t mean we will forget everything we’ve done so far, so I’d like to thank my people, my players and the country.”
Although Messi will turn 40 before the next World Cup, his performances throughout the 2026 tournament have fueled speculation that he could still feature at the 2030 edition, which will be jointly hosted by Morocco, Portugal and Spain, with opening matches scheduled to take place in Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay to mark the tournament’s centenary.
