“Peter Obi, Go Back”: NDC Condemns Alleged Obstruction

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, has condemned the alleged attack and obstruction of its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, during his visit to Benue State to sympathise with victims of the Yelwata killings.

The party said Obi’s convoy was allegedly stopped by suspected thugs who prevented him from entering Yelwata community, where more than 270 people were reportedly killed.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, in Abuja, the party alleged that the group was led by an aide to the Benue State Governor, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia.

The statement described the incident as disturbing, noting that Obi travelled to Benue to mourn with the families of the victims, listen to their concerns and show solidarity with the affected community.

According to the statement, Obi arrived in Benue at about 9 a.m. but was prevented from proceeding to Yelwata by individuals chanting, “Peter Obi, go back.”

It quoted Obi as saying that his visit was not political but aimed at mourning with families who had lost loved ones and discussing ways of preventing further killings.

The statement said the incident was particularly unfortunate at a time Nigerians should be united in condemning violence and finding lasting solutions to insecurity.

It maintained that the people of Benue and other Nigerians deserve to live, travel and farm without fear, stressing that the protection of human life must remain the primary responsibility of government.

The party called on the Benue State Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible and ensure that the perpetrators face the law.

It also urged authorities to guarantee the safety of citizens and political leaders visiting communities affected by violence to express solidarity with victims.

The NDC said the alleged obstruction would not deter the party from advocating for the protection of lives and property across the country.

According to the statement, the party reaffirmed its solidarity with the victims, their families and residents of Yelwata, while calling for urgent measures to prevent further loss of lives in Benue State.
