As former President Olusegun Obasanjo marks his 89th birthday, tributes have continued to pour in from across Nigeria and beyond.

Among the notable messages is that of Yakubu Dogara, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and current Chairman of the Nigeria Credit Guarantee Company Limited, who described Obasanjo as “a statesman of uncommon stature” and a living testimony of grace.
Dogara’s tribute reflects Obasanjo’s remarkable journey — from his early days as a young military commander to his historic role as Nigeria’s Head of State, and later as a democratically elected president. Few leaders in Africa have held both military and civilian leadership positions with such resilience, vision, and lasting influence.
According to Dogara, Obasanjo’s leadership was not driven by personal gain but by service to the people and future generations. He recalled how Obasanjo strengthened democratic institutions during Nigeria’s transition from military rule, championed anti-corruption initiatives, and repositioned the nation’s economy through bold reforms. Dogara noted that these achievements remain key milestones in Nigeria’s political and economic history.
Beyond Nigeria’s borders, Obasanjo’s reputation as a continental leader remains widely acknowledged. His involvement in African peace processes — including efforts in Liberia and Sudan — earned him recognition as a respected mediator and global diplomat. Dogara stressed that Obasanjo’s voice has consistently amplified Africa’s presence on the world stage, ensuring the continent is not overlooked in global affairs.
Dogara also highlighted Obasanjo’s role beyond politics, describing him as a mentor and a conscience of the nation whose courage to speak truth to power has helped guide Nigeria through challenging periods. “Baba Obasanjo’s wisdom continues to guide our country. His insistence on justice and equity has made him a moral compass for leaders and citizens alike,” Dogara said.
Concluding his message, Dogara prayed for Obasanjo’s continued health and strength, saying: “At 89, Baba Obasanjo stands as a living testimony of God’s grace and favour. May his legacy forever shine as a beacon of hope for Nigeria and Africa.”
For many Nigerians, Obasanjo’s birthday is not only a celebration of longevity but also a time to reflect on the lasting impact of his leadership. His life story — marked by sacrifice, resilience, and service — continues to inspire generations, reminding the nation that true leadership is measured not by power, but by the ability to serve humanity.
