INEC Urges Area Council Chairmen to Deliver Democratic Dividends
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has presented Certificates of Return to the Chairmen and Councillors elected in the Saturday, February 21, 2026, FCT Area Council election.
Speaking at the ceremony in Abuja, the FCT Resident Electoral Commissioner, Aminu Idris, said the presentation was in accordance with Section 72(1) of the Electoral Act, which requires INEC to issue Certificates of Return within 14 days after an election.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner urged the six Area Council Chairmen and the 62 Ward Councillors to regard their victory as a call to service and to ensure that residents enjoy the full dividends of democracy.
According to him, “I encourage you to see your mandate as a responsibility, working diligently to serve the electorate in your constituencies. I also seize this opportunity to express the Commission’s appreciation to all our stakeholders, particularly the police, political parties, and all participating candidates. Congratulations to those who have been elected.”
One of the councillors representing Chibiri Ward in Kuje Area Council, Mr. Mohammed Dantani, assured that the councillors would collaborate with the Chairmen to fulfill their campaign promises.
Mr. Dantani stated that the construction of the Lanto Bridge, promised during the campaign by the elected Chairman, was already underway. “The bridge project is already in process by the elected Chairman. During his campaign, he promised to construct the Lanto Bridge. Now that he has been elected, I am confident he will deliver on that promise,” he said.
The event, held at the FCT INEC headquarters, attracted a large crowd of party supporters, family members, and friends of the newly elected Area Council Chairmen and Councillors.
